The Real Downton Abbey and What Life was like as a Housemaid in Victorian Times

On Monday 24 May 2021 approximately forty members enjoyed a talk by IanPorter, telling us all about life below stairs in Victorian times, and exactly what life was like working as a lowly servant in those days.
The work they did was hard and strenuous for very small wages, however as he explained, there was very little work elsewhere so many young girls applied to mansions and stately homes for work.
Ian showed us pictures of uniforms worn and told us also that sleeping quarters were very sparse for the staff unless you were a lady's maid or a butler.
